When the Eaton County Courthouse first opened it is likely
that the only women to work in the building were those that came occasionally to
clean, replace the dirty hand towels in the restrooms, and perhaps empty the
many spittoons littered throughout the building. Though their work was
necessary, their impact on the building remained small compared to the male
office holders working in the courthouse.
Throughout the years the number of women visiting and participating in
activities in the courthouse grew. Women began to serve as jurors in trials
taking place in the second floor courtrooms. Young women began working as
stenographers and clerks. Eventually, Eaton County citizens began electing
female officials to occupy the offices previously held only by men.
As more and more women came into the building on a regular basis it is likely
that they changed the appearance of the courthouse along the way. As you pass
through the building, think not only of the men who walked where you are today,
but also of the women who changed the face of Eaton County’s most important
building.
